<VV> Transverse to longitudinal?

Is it possible to run  what was a transverse FWD engine and transmission longitudinally and only use one axle output as a driveshaft? Then since the diff is in the transaxle, run a 1:1 ring and pinion gear at the rear axle? (I don't know how you would do that, but it doesn't matter for the sake of discussion.)

No don't ask me why. Just humor me and tell me if it can be done.. <g>
