Hi Andy,
No, I believe that is the correct approach. I have done that on my Devin
C. I then finally gave up on DOT5 and went to Valvoline Synpower synthetic
DOT3/4 which I like MUCH better. While it is still hygroscopic, it has a
higher boiling point over DOT5 and none of the spongy pedal feel. I tried
forever to get that spongy pedal fixed and finally gave up. Many have the
same issue. As for hygroscopic versus non-hygroscopic, moisture is GOING
to get into the system simply due to condensation during temperature
excursions. Then it can pool at the low point in the system and still
result in rust, so there is simply no long term solution. DOT5 goes
farthest in providing protection against rust PROVIDED you are against
changing fluid regularly. I finally just gave up and went with the
synthetic DOT3/4 and am quite happy with it's performance.

I recommend you research carefully before you jump fully into DOT5. I
thought I did and tried for a long time to make it work. Didn't for
me. Try searching the VV archives or Corvair Center's forum for successes
and alternatives.
