<VV> Corvairs and Mercedes

The current Automobile Quarterly (Vol 45 No. 3) has an article by Karl Ludvigsen on the legendary Mercedes engineer Rudolf Ulenhaut.  On page 106 it says:
   
  When General Motors brought out its rear-engined Corvair it fascinated the Mercedes engineers.  "We made quite a good car out of it!" Rudi told an astonished group of GM stylists. "It was faster than the Mercedes in cornering." said Erich Waxenberger, "with changes to the suspension and the angle of the wheels, the camber."
   
  So that confirms that Corvairs are better than Mercedes!  (Earlies, that is!)
