     This excess of oil (or whatever) also drains into your combustion
chambers via the valve guides when the engine isn't running and produces the
smoke you're noting on startup.

Let me be the first to disagree here.  The valve guides go UPHILL to the
combustion chamber so no oil is going to "drain" into the chamber! <GGGGGGG>
