Allow me to clarify.
I mis-read part of Bill's message.
The mount that failed that I recently saw was a result of putting the cup of the floor jack directly ON the mount.
As Matt indicates, I usually use the space on the diff directly behind the bellhousing to jack the rear of the car....but JUST far enough up to get the jackstands under at their lowest position. Then I go to the jackpoints on the sides of the car, using a piece of 4x4 wood on the jack cup to jack the car up higher, and adjust my jackstands accordingly.
Though I will not disagree with Bill's analysis of reverse compression of motor/transmission mounts,
I would guess that this method does not put any undue pressure on either the engine or transmission mounts, at least not for the amount of time that it takes to put the jackstands under the car. By NO means would I recommend supporting the vehicle in this manner for more than the minute it takes to place the jackstands.
At any rate I have never had one fail as a result of using this method.
The tip that I believe Tom said about driving up on a couple boards to increase clearance for the floor jack is one I have often used. However, I also have a set of ramps that I use to drive the front end of the car up on, and then remove the incline portion when I am doing a job where the tires can stay on the car.
