AC used a wye circuit to compensate for varying voltage for as long as I 
can remember, think most pre-computer dash gauges do so will read correctly 
across a broad range of voltages (typ 9v-15v). Only problem likely with 
going from 6 to 12v would be overdriving the reference leg but since the 
meters were designed for very low currents it might last for quite a while.
