I've always understood that the "lack of voltage" is what causes the clocks 
to fail in the first place. The voltage drops (for whatever reason: sitting 
over the winter, light left on, bad alternator, yadda-yadda-yadda) and the 
ensuing spark is NOT enough to kick the points back and wind the clock, so the 
points weld themselves together, which in turn burns up/shorts out the winding 
solenoid.....

Try the resetting of the clock at the same time each day... you'll be 
surprised!
