Unlike places like Colorado, the routes he followed (US2, US12, Montana  200) 
are routes parallel to railroads (US2 with the Great Northern)(Montana 200  
with the Milwaukee Road) or running over former rail routes (US12 with the  
Milwaukee Road.) Naturally the grades over the passes would be easier than those  
used for motor vehicles only.
