Dave,Sears and MAC tools sell a stud removal tool that fits over the stud and 'cams' tight on it,like an oilfilter wrench action, tightening as you unscrew the stud..they chew on the shank some,tho..i've had better luck getting heads off old motors by soaking the top nuts, wirebrushing the ends, and actually tightening the nut a tad-you'll hear a "tink"-then quick loosen the nut..use a breaker bar to loosen, then tighten,loosen/tighten,etc so the rust buildup doesn't jam the threads and unscrew the stud...when you have the block split,i've found they fit in the laundry sink (i've got a plastic one just for cleaning parts that drains into a 5-gal pail) ,use a partsclening brush and bad gas/diesel to de-gunk,or spray degreaser if not too dirty ..oven cleaner works, too, but rinse it off after 5 minutes, and DON'T spray the cam/crank journals or lifter bores with it...I usually spray it on and start working it w/parts brush immediately, then hose it off...if you have a sandblaster, you could use
Boraxo to blast the case, but email me off-line first for tips/cautions...Tom Z
