I am not convinced GM EVER WANTED to produce small cars! At the time 
they brought out the Corvair, I thought it was just a ploy in GM's 
battle to get import quotas imposed on VWs.

Certainly corporations operate at many levels, and I am sure the 
"Corvair Team" wanted the Corvair to succeed, but I think GM's Board of 
Directors wasn't unhappy when Corvairs went away.
