Hey guys and gals,
I just got my ASE Tech News (one of the benefits of being ASE Certified) and
there is an article on the newest engine oil designations... They go into some
detail on the use of API SA designated oils versus the API SL designated
(ILSAC GF-3), which is the newest "dino" oil out there (but they say API SM will
soon follow)... they discuss cam lobe and follower wear, as well as sludge
build up...
This comes right on the heels of the question someone asked about the "old
metal oil cans full of oil" someone here found... I figure the only good use for
SA designated oil is in the oil bath air filter base.
;-)
They go into more detail at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers website:

NOTE, this study doesn't name the BRAND of oil, just the SL designation, and
it is a conventional MINERAL OIL, not a SYNTHETIC... what you use is your
choice, but look at the little API circle on the back of the bottle, and it will
tell you what the S# is...
Just a little automotive news I wanted to share.
Later,
Lonzo... ASE Certified GM Parts Consultant & Automotive Parts Specialist...
and all the certifications in the world won't fix my leg... but time sure does
help.
