I believe WLS stood for "World's Largest Store," as in Sears & Roebuck whom
I believe owned the station

My recollection is:

WCFL = (W) Chicago Federation of Labor
WLS = World's Largest Station
WGN = World's Greatest Newspaper (owned by the Chicago Tribune)
