Well, this goes back to the early eighties, but my Dad used to run a Vair
engine on a Finch dolly after we had worked on it (either after rebuild or
involving a engine that had been sitting for a while). The 2 biggest factors were
gas supply and battery power....The gas was run from outside the garage, the
garage was left open, and the battery was used only to start the engine as the
Alternator was installed along with the belt.
He let it run for quite some time in order to fill the lifters and for the
engine to quiet down and allow him to pinpoint problems. Ofcourse, he did
prime the oil with a drill as explained in several Vair books.
I remember as a young lad that the Vair engine without muffling seemed to
be a roaring monster and that I was puzzled how a motor cut just sit there on
that dolly without lurching off or something.
But it worked, the engine stayed on it without bucking and the engine was
installed into the Vair that night...

What about running it (gods willing?) on garage floor?
