<VV> Portland Photos Volume 3

And it used to get a lot higher before most of it was dammed for power
generation and flood control. The last wild stretch of the Columbia River in
the U.S. is the Hanford Reach. Interestingly, the only reason this exists is
because it borders the Hanford nuclear facility and is part of the security
perimeter. Some of the best aquatic and on-shore wildlife is in this area.
Oh, the irony...

We took a self organized Jet Boat Tour of the river. "Yes", it does
actually get that high. At least twice in the last 50 years (the last in
'96) the water has been right up near the top of those posts. Judging by
water marks on the posts I saw, average looks to be 3-4 feet.

Regards,
Joel

The river is tidal near its mouth with the Pacific, but also experiences
great changes in depths depending on the season. I do no know if it ever
gets as high as the poles would indicate.
