Mike, the brakes are designed have a servo action when applied when
moving forward which is why it they "loosened" when backing up. I may
suspect that one possible cause may be the emergency brake cable did not
release properly on the right side. Another may be that the adjuster or
hardware on the right side is improperly installed or was too tight to
begin with.
An examination of the brake hardware and a proper adjustment may be all
that you need. Yes, definitely bleed the right side brake line to remove
any fluid that might have boiled. This will definitely give a spongy
brake pedal. Be sure to rough sand the offending shoes to remove any
glaze.
Let us know what you found.
Getting all the information is most of the solution.

... I could not move the car forward at all - I stalled the engine
twice trying. It finally dawned on me to try going backwards and that
worked so I got it out of the middle of the road and on to the shoulder.
I had been on the freeway (at reasonable speeds 60-65) for about 1/2 an
hour and had just gotten off. I thought I was going the wrong way so I
made a u-turn at a light. I then drove under the freeway and stopped at
the next red light. When I went to go on the green - stuck!!! There
was smoke coming from the wheel and it was HOT! After it cooled down
(30 minutes or so) it let go and the car would move. I had it towed
home though. The brakes work but are very soft - need a good bleeding
at least....
