Chuck -
On behalf of all of VV, I'd like to thank you for your half-remembered
quotation of a fabricated story that, while it has nothing whatsoever to do
with Corvairs, still promotes a chest-beating nationalism that, at the very
moment I write, is driving the occupation and suppression of at least two
countries far away from the United States, and has got the whole world
wondering just what country the United States may next so overrun, and what
(further) lies may be made up about them to justify it.
Personally, I prefer lies about Corvairs, at least on this site.

Joe Potts

Wish I had kept the story that went through my hands
only two months ago so I could give you the exact
location, restaurant name and the vet involved.
Ted and Hanoi Jane were out for dinner in a town near
their Montana ranch. This is one of those small town
places where all the locals eat and everybody knows
everybody. The place was busy with some folks waiting
for tables. The Turners went into their "don't you
know who I am" routine and demanded the hostess give
them a table immediately. When she explianed they
don't take reservations, don't give anyone priority
seating, and wouldn't put them ahead of the other
people who were waiting, they asked for the manager.
The manager told them the same story, and they
demanded to talk to the owner.
When they hit him with the "don't you know who I" am
routine, he told them yes, he knows exactly who they
are. I'll try to reconstruct the quote as best as I
remember. He then said you don't know who I am. I am a
Vietnam vet and the owner of this restaurant, and not
only can you not push your way past my customers, but
you can't eat in my place at all. Get out and stay
out.
Another fine lesson in how free speech comes with a
price.
