Can't make Helen, Lon. Will you be at the Iowa mini?
This weekend... The Plan....
Arrive Long Beach Airport on Friday (4/22) around 6PM CA time, taxi to
Lakewood (how appropriate - a town named after a Corvair). Anyone know what
the taxi should cost?
Inspect (have not seen it yet) and pick up "new" '65 Monza Convert. Black
license plate - spent it's whole life in CA.
Assuming everything is JF, exchange $$$ for title and hit the road. Will
head for San Bernardino and pick up on whatever remnants of old US 66 I can
find. Hope to make around 250 miles that night. If I'm reading the map
right - and want to stay on or near 66, it will be Route 15 to Barstow and
Route 40 to Needles. Could I do that in 5 hours or less? I figure that it
will be getting pretty close to midnight by then (2AM Illinois time).
Assuming that portion works out OK, I'll have somewhere between 1700 and
1800 miles left to go to make it home. I hope to do that over a 2 day
period - with appropriate stops at Route 66 icons along the way. Anyone
care to suggest the spots that I should NOT miss?
I won't be able to stop for long at any one spot (museums are out). I've
got to be making nearly 900 miles per day. But, maybe good meal place
suggestions would fit the bill. So where in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas,
Oklahoma, SE Corner of Kansas, Missouri are the MUST SEE old 66 spots? All
suggestions welcome.
I'll not have a computer with on the trip. Will try to post results after
recovery from this whirlwind (hopefully no breakdowns) trip. Yes, I WILL
have the CORSA member list and a cell phone along for the ride (insurance
purposes).
If anyone wants to wave, I'll be in a '65 - Cameo Beige (black top -
hopefully out of sight). You can try me on the cell, but with the wind
noise, I might not hear it and if you leave a message I probably won't get
it. (630) 880-7773. If you want to get me excited, I'll have the phone
between my legs and turned to vibrator! That's always fun....
