Joe,

I've used two thin coats of spray lacquer and allowed them plenty of time 
to cure -- at least a few days, preferably more -- and carefully tightened 
them with a six-point socket without chipping. I've also used regular 
enamel spray -- thin coats again -- and then heat cured the bolts in an old 
toaster oven for about 15-20 minutes as soon as the paint was dry. A 
six-point socket didn't damage those, either.
