<VV> Turn Signal & Brake Light Problem.

The turn signal switch has separate contacts for the front and rear
lamps. This is so the front lamps do not come on when the brake pedal is
depressed. The front turn signal filament is wired to the dash
indicator in the wiring harness. If the dash indicator lights, the
front lamp should also light. If the rear lamp contact in the turn
signal switch is bad, then the rear may not light at the same time as
the dash indicator and front lamps. Earlies have a cable that can
sometimes be adjusted so the contacts in the turn signal switch all
connect at the saqe time. The early switch can also be taken apart as a
last result and cleaned & tweaked. But usually replacement is the only
sure cure. Lates have the switch intergral with the cancelling cams [and
4 way flasher switch for very Lates]. These contacts can also be cleaned
& tweaked as a last result, but usually the results are unsatisfactory.
If the dash indicator stays on, the usual cause is a bulb out. Either a
broken filament, bad socket contact, or bad ground connection. The
flasher usually needs the current from two 21cp bulbs to make it flash,
the internal bi-metal strip needs heat to activate and watts=current
squared * resistance, W=I squared R. But a bad connection in the switch
will also stop current flow to the rear bulb, and the dash indicator
will stay on along with the front lamp.
