Well, Jeff, it sounds like a deal I had on ebay a couple of years ago. I
had a 308 Ferrari that I sold on ebay. The buyer's name was "Buddy", but I
prefer to call him as "Bubba". Bubba wanted me to pick him up at a mile marker,
as he was going to come via Greyhound. (Apparently, he's not familiar with
either the concept of a bus STATION or an airport. I suggested a local
buyer's check and shipping the car; not for him, he said! He was going to DRIVE it
back. Now bear in mind that this puts 3000 miles on a fairly aged '75 model
showing 52k. 52k makes this a higher mileage Ferrari and 3000 miles puts
you that much closer to the major service at 60k (Figure $5k+ for the service).
Also bear in mind that anything breaks, an engine rebuild is about $20k.
AAA told him 4 - 5 days for the trip. He figured that by driving day and
night it would only take 2.5 days and he would save on motels. Did I mention
that it was November? OK... take the southern route, Bubba, I said. Nah, too
much extra time, I'll take the Northern route (Idaho to South Carolina).
Bubba, that takes you over the continental divide, then through the freezing-cold
lands in November... Not a problem!!!??? What about snow?? What about the
last $1200 windshield in North America having just been installed? What
about the fresh $1000 repaint of the nose?? This guy was setting himself up for
a big, big fall and I saw myself being asked to step-up is anything did go
wrong. In the end, I returned his deposit and informed him that I WOULDN'T
sell him the car. I sold it to the second bidder, a guy in Seattle who flew in
with his wife and met me at a specialist's shop for a buyer's check. He
bought the car and 5 hours later it was in his garage in Seattle. Best decision
I ever made!

It keeps getting better folks. The guy that actually won the auction for my
'60 for $800.00 is flying in to Denver from Toronto to pick up the car and
drive it home. Isn't that about 2000 miles? I hate to put his name out but
maybe I should so that someone could tell him he's nuts and I could let him off
the hook for this deal. Sorry, I just had to pass this on. Thanks for all
replies to my previous post. Scratching My Head, Jeff Golden <unsnip>
