gas heater on my rampy seems to be very quiet with no exciting "boom"...had 
that when gas was not shutting off at burner after bad gas..yup it was scarey!
i had a small puller that did those washer drive cams kinda like a kd tool 
for valve spring removal. sometimes good hefty long nose pliers will work.they 
made cams out of cast and nylon.  hope you have cast...
