Sounds like vapor lock.  Yes, you SHOULD have the insulators on AND make 
sure you do not have fuel lines touching anything hot (like the top side of 
the side shroud).  Does the engine tend to run hot?  Have heads been 
de-flashed?  Is oil cooler blocked by debris?  You run Premium gas? 
Synthetic oil?  Fuel pump is in good shape?  Do you hear any ping from the 
engine (sometimes hard to hear in Rampside), but pay attention when in a 
tunnel or near barriers at the roadside.

There are plenty of things that will help an engine run cooler.  That is 
likely what you need to do - get it to run cooler and keep the fuel lines 
away from hot spots.
