Just retired a Ford Festiva (Mazda design) this summer. The oil pan
rusted through, oil ran out. I thought "why not?", so I drove it to
work for 2 weeks with not a drop of oil. Granted, only 8-9 miles each
way, but after a week with no ill effects, I thought I'd drain the
radiator to finally kill it. Drove another week, another 200 miles, and
upon scrapping the car, decided to keep the block in the garage as a
spare. The engine had 246k miles and the cylinder walls looked like
they had just been re-honed.
Corvair: Put almost 2k miles on the "new" 66 Monza vert this summer.
The wife is happy (and she has finally got the "car bug") and so I am
happy. We've had a few little hiccups, but I've been impressed with how
easy they have been to repair, and how reliable a 38 year old car can
be.
