In the August Issue of Automotive Industries Magazine, there is an article
on a new BMW Turbo-diesel 3.0 Liter inline 6-cylinder motor. It uses two t
urbo-chargers, but neither in the side-by-side set-up like the 300ZX or the
compound, in-line, version like the 3rd gen RX-7. Instead it uses them in parallel
(sort-of). A small turbo to boost at low revs with intake air pulled through
the larger turbo (it's exhaust side operating but not very effective, since
the exhaust gas has already gone through the small turbo.) At mid-range, the
exhaust goes through both turbos, though some exhaust gas bypasses the
smaller turbo and goes to the bigger one. Eventually only the large turbo is
operating, and the small turbo is bypassed. The engine puts out 268 HP from 183
cubes, (and 391 lb.ft or torque) and the torque curve is flat from 1500 RPM to
5500 RPM - A high RPM for a diesel. The AI article has some schematics and
photos. Worth finding a copy. - Seth Emerson
