In view of this, I favor John Ryall's explanation that the late-model
shafts bear suspension loads (which they do). The early-model shafts do not
bear suspension loads. Obviously, both types of shaft are about the same
length, and carry similar torsional loads.

Well, Joe - The early driveshafts carry a different load than the lates.
Remember, all the upward load of the weight of the wheel is carried on the
flange of the early. The late has the flange and an inside Yoke to carry that
load. The late driveshaft carries some in and out thrust - Mostly inward. But not
any cantilevered load like the earlies. I drove a late model some 40 miles
with the yoke loose in the tube of a late model driveshaft. The wheel loading
was all that was keeping the shaft assembly together. The drive systems
slipped like a badly oiled clutch disc, but replacing the shaft cured all - once I
knew what it was. - Seth
