<VV> Corvair half shafts...(humor?)

Hey DollarBox, The answer is very simple............To avoid any chance
of metal fatique, Hollow shafts were used to avoid excessive heat build
up as Corvairs were air cooled and didn't need any additional heat to be
retained in the drivetrain !!! <GGG> GM engineers also experimented with
external fins attached to the half shafts but found them to be somewhat
hazardous in deep snow applications as they would throw excessive snow
into the area above them and freeze the gasoline and brake fluid 
.................
glad to be able to clear up the mystery............Bob Helt will probably have
another opinion !!! <GGG>
