<VV> brakes question (NON-CORVAIR)

Sorry for the noncorvair question...but before I can finish working on my
Corvair to get back on the road running happy, I have to make sure my
wife's vehicle is sound. It just picked now to act up! Two weeks ago
the radiator sprouted on me...now the brakes are squeaking like crazy. .
I replaced the pads a year ago or so, so it shouldn't be the brakes
warning strip...but that is what it sounded like. I took off the
wheel...yup, very little inside pad left and tons of dust. If test it a
bit and find that the driver's side front brake caliper will not release
completely. When driving, the van doesn't pull to one side, but the
passenger side front spins much more easily (I could barely get the
driver's side hub to spin at all with e-brake off and in nutral). There
is no sign of leaking that I can see yet...it just looks like the caliper
is not releasing completely. I am guessing there is something wrong with
the little cylinder on the caliper...but before I start buying parts and
such I thoght I would get your opinions. Also, is it possible that I
messed it up when I changed the pads? I remember that the caliper piston
was a bear to compress with my giant pliers.

Thanks all!
