You're right, that could be the situation.

I was referring to a situation where the rise in head temp was 
temporary, such as climbing a hill or maybe idling. But, if the head 
temp goes up and stays up, the head temp would indeed be your first 
warning. Then, as long as the head temp wasn't severely high, I'd watch 
the oil temp. I'd figure I could drive a ways before the oil came up to 
a dangerous level. Obviously, if the head temp stays up, you have to 
make a decision. Other factors that would come in would be such things 
as, is the engine knocking? etc.
