The company that manufactured the Atlas (SM-65) was General
Dynamics. General Dynamics was formed in 1952 when the Electric Boat
Company of Groton purchased Convair and merged it with Canadair. The
Convair name continued as the GD California civilian aircraft production
facility (Convair 240/340/440/540/580/600/880/990). The other GD large
aircraft production facility (AF plant #4, Fort Worth, TX) was responsible
for military aircraft (B-36A/C/D, YB-60A, F-102A/B, F-106A/B,
B-58A, RB-57D/F, F-16 A/B/C/D, F-111A/B/C/D/E/F, EF-111A and the
FB-111A). The Convair name came from the merger of the Consolidated
Aircraft Corporation with Vultee Airvraft in 1943.
