 Chuck,

 Use the 3/8th's. Works well, especially if you have
time to let it cook in the sun. I always prep the
channel well, by stripping any rust or imperfections
that will hold debris. Then give it a good thick coat
of spray Rustoleum Satin Black 7777. This acts as the
primer, they suggest, and should help preserve this
rust prone area.
