<VV> Race history

Hi guys,
After a very long hiatus from this great site I have returned. I am now a
married man and things are great down under. If you are visiting Melbourne
please look me up.
What I would like to know is when Corvairs raced in Production "Touring" car
races in the 1960s prior to Trans-am starting in 1966. e.g. SCCA "A" Sedan
races or even in Europe. I am well aware of the Stinger.
My main interest is finding out if any 1965 models ran during 1964.
Here in Australia Historic touring cars allows FIA homologated cars to run
up to build dates of Dec 31, 1964. Many people run Mustangs even though they
didn't really start racing until 1965, apparently a handful ran in 1964. Did
the Corvair enter similar races.
The class structure here in Australia would allow me to run in the 2-3ltr
class and probably do very well.
Please let me know what you think.
Cheers
Daniel Zmood

Hear hear - it's bad enough with my scruffy 65 4-door that I got with 11000
miles on and have now taken to 16000 - I want to keep it under 20.
Perhaps I should disconnect the speedo cable, to keep the miles nice and
low... (;-))

Honestly, I wouldn't want it. I want to be able to drive my Corvair, not
trailer it around. This one is too clean and nice to drive. Plus, my
wife would hurt me in a serious way if I bought it..

All of this talk about damaging the fuel pump damage through manual
operation! I just took a look at a pump and accessory housing from my parts
supply. I
don't think it's likely that one could damage the pump through manual
operation.
On the parts I have, the fuel pump is nearly bottomed on the accy housing
when it's locked in the normal position. There's only about 0.025"
additional
clearance.
When manually operating the pump, I think most people don't come anywhere
near bottoming the pump on the housing and even if they did, it would only
cause
an additional 0.025" stroke and that would only be true if the pump
eccentric
were at it's high point.
I have done "fuel-pump push-ups" without any ill effects since 1970. I do
worry about damaging the o-ring and for that reason, I lube it before
operating
the pump manually.
Feel free to use what ever method you prefer. About half the time I do
"pump
push-ups", the other half of the time I pre-fill the carb bowls through the
vent tubes using a pump-oiler filled with gasoline.

I saw the car while it was in Toronto and up for bid on Ebay previously. The
mileage is authentic as at that time it was 43 some miles. The present owner
says the body work is perfect which is not what I saw as there was
"warranty" damage to the rear air intake as the deck lid was not assembled
tightly to the hinges (loose bolts), therefore the deck lid edge and grille
needed "warranty" bodywork and paint. There was also a small area below the
rear bumper where warehouse storage damage had occurred. These body work
repairs were probably completed before the car left the dealership in
Toronto. The interior is perfect except that the carpet needed to be cleaned
to remove the storage mustiness from it. That was in in 2001 just before I
went to the Chicago Convention.

Is there by chance anyone on VV that lives close enough to subject item to
actually view this car and tell us if it's fact or fiction. Since it has
had
several homes over the US and Canada, the 50 miles would almost have had to
been put on it loading and unloading it on transporters. If it's true fact,
someone will soon be the new owner of a real jewel.

JR
Two different cars both 69 low mileage.
If you remember the grey one turned up the night I was in Chicago in June
2000. I had the pleasure of cruising in your convertible that night. So
having seen the grey 500 and this one on Ebay I can definitely say they are
2 separate but very low mileage 69s.

I did not see the car being mentioned. The link did not work for me.
There was a grey one in Chicago about 5 or 6 yrs back that had 50 miles. It
was a LM 500 - I forget what yr, but may have been '69. Anyway, the guy
that bought it put about 400 or 500 miles on it, lost his interest in
Corvairs and sold everything (including a nice Rampside). He is now into
Amphicars and has more than one of them . I happened to see him at a show
back in September. I don't know who bought the 500, but I'm beginning to
wonder if there is a chance that the car under discussion is that one.
Personally, I'd not be interested in a car like that. I'd feel bad about
adding miles and I ENJOY DRIVING my Corvairs.

Subject: <VV> Distributor Recommendation
Hi all. I went over and picked up my scalded cat from Bob Bauer tonight
-- man it runs nice! It hums so nice and runs tight...Bob was able to
track down the dozen or so "little" problems that were adding up to the
misfiring, lack of power, and poor carb performance...I could have never
gotten results like these on my own! The ultra distributor he put in is
doing great -- but I need to get it back to him...so I am shopping for a
new one. I have heard rave reviews for the Dale unit...but it runs
around $185 from the Vendors as well as from Dale Mfg. directly...ouch.
Underground has a rebuilt unit for $100 less...I am looking for feedback
from those who have used the Dale and those who have used Underground's
-- what am I sacrificing by saving money? This is a driver and will
likely be upgraded to the Pertronix 2. I'm sorry if I am breaking some
sort of courtesy code by asking about specific vendor products, but I
really don't have the knowledge or experience to make an informed choice
on this one. Those are the only two I have compared and would be
interested in hearing of any other leads you might have as well.
Thanks!
