Hey Vairites,
I remember a time that I was on the way to work and I always drove by a
area that was auto-dealer strip USA...Nothing but auto dealers for a mile or
so...(Wendover Ave in Greensboro <for those in N.C.>) and as I'm driving in a
slight rain in my 66 4 door monza (at that time a 270,000 mile Condition 2 car)
I catch sight of a LM red 2-door on the corner of one of these
dealerships....I whip it in and pull up to AND park BEHIND the Vair..
Right away I can tell its seen better days...Red paint on the air cleaner
cover, tears in the interior and the headliner torn AND REMOVED from the door
to the rear of the car....As I'm looking at the car, in the rain, noone is on
the way to 'sell" me the car...
Hmmmmmm, a orphan car, not the most popular collectors car, and the
potential customer is driving same type car...hmmm, sounds like that would be a
customer to sell to...UNLESS.... (thought process to be continued)
So I get frustrated by the lack of attention after 10 minutes of looking
around it and crawling through it....I go inside and <me being me> say, "Hey,
anyone wanta talk to me about this car out here?"
A salesman comes up and asks, "Which one?"
"The Corvair...How much are you asking for it" (and me thinking $800-1200)
He asks the sales manager...the SMGR says loudly, "$6,000"
I literally turned around and left, laughing loudly.

Seems like I am seeing quite a few more Vairs on car lots in the St.
Louis area...and haven't found one reasonably priced yet. Today stopped
to look at a very nice looking '62 500. Very little rust (but some minor
bubbling), clean undercarriage, nice paint (looked repainted), and decent
interior...I love the look of the EM, almost as good as the LM, but the
guy comes out and starts babbling. Starts with small talk, then tries to
impress me with his knowledge (said the engine was prone to leak because
they were installed upside down!). So how much? The sticker on the
window shows a highlighted old car price guide showing pricing for
anywhere between $4000 to $15000+...for a SPYDER! I mention that the 500
is generally not as desirable as the Spyder and he says that is why they
are only asking $3,000. This is the third Vair I have seen on a car lot
in the area...and all of them have been priced to gouge. Oh well, I
guess they don't mind selling them...it sure makes their lot stick out!
Not too many cars draw the looks like a good looking Vair!
