Bill,

Glad to here that you thought about the question.  I thought that you
probably had however there might be some on the list that would not think
about it and then wonder why the "replacement" belt didn't last long.  I
suspect that it will shorten the life of the belt.  It should allow for a
quick change on the side of the road until you can replace it with a new
belt in your garage as someone else pointed out.

Well, Keith, that is a good question, and for now it is unanswered.
However, I did consider it, and came to the following conclusions:

1) The installed belts are subjected to the same heat as the spare.
2) I did install the hoses to protect the spare from direct contact with the
compressor.
3) The shape of the spare belt is approximately the same as the shape when
installed (I know, it doesn't look like it in the picture, but it is).
4) Why obsess about it -- try it and see what happens.
