I'm rebuilding my front brakes. The backing plates are rusty and I'm
going to clean them up. I was considering coating them with POR-15 or a
high temp paint. Is this advisable or will it interfere with the
backing plate contact surfaces?
hi Mark --
Yes, painting the backing plates is a good idea, although i'd sandblast or
clean with a wire wheel first.
No, painting the backing plates won't interfere with the contact surfaces.
i think the correct service procedure is to put a thin coating of grease
(white lithium, iirc) on the six little pads where the brake shoe steel contacts
the backing plate, to prevent squeaks.
