I had a '46 Chevy pickup for a shop truck that did a similar thing . . . thought I broke an axle.  Pulled the rear cover off spun the tire and the spider gear didn't move. Looked closer and saw the axle was turning inside the spider gear . . . the splines were quite worn.  A trip to the salvage for an Ultra axle and spider and I was back on the road again.

Once the rear cover is off the problem should be easy to spot.
