    When the starter on a Vair starts to get tired it will drag and be slow 
enough that the engine will not start when it gets hot. The comment about the 
heat shield was for the SBC. When the field coils start having a problem in a 
Vair they will work fine cold because there is less resistance in the coils. As 
they heat up they build resistance and fail to produce the magnetic field 
they are supposed to and the starter will draw 3-400 amps when hot, 150-200 amps 
cold.
    The trouble shooting deal for this is run the Vair till it is hot and you 
know it will not start. Be sure to be in your driveway and have a jumper 
battery or vehicle ready. When you shut off the Vair try to restart, if it will 
not start then hook the jumper to the Vair, if the Vair starts it indicates a 
bad battery, IF with the jumper on the Vair it still turns slow and refuses to 
turn fast enough to start then that indicates a bad starter.
    This is not fool proof because a bad battery cable will do almost the 
same thing. So, you need to look at the basic trouble shooting things first then 
do the jumper thing and then it is pretty accurate.
