Early engines had steel crank pullies.  The part driving the fan belt is
riveted to the iron hub.  These rivets come loose just like flywheel rivets
come loose.  The pulley then rattles while running.  There are two tapped
holes in the hub for a puller.  You can put screws in these two holes to
stop the play and rattle.  Be sure the screws don't rub on the crank seal
and motor mount.  This is worth a try before tearing the engine down looking
for a broken crank.
