I have this same set up on our 65, jumpered wires and all. That set up
has been on the car for 5 years now and I have not replaced any alternators. I
don't recall if I have used any booster cables with the car but I have with
other cars with that style of alternator with no problems.
My thoughts are that it was coincidental, especially after 500 miles.
