Followup:   

It's worth mentioning that this works best if a wrapped belt is used and
it's given a shot of spray silicone or other "slick-em" non-petroleum based
lube.   

Also, make sure the pulleys are bright and clean and shiny.   Anything else
will wear the belt quickly... and this includes ALL the pulleys.   Clean
pulleys, lubed wrapped belt, adjusted slightly loose, never toss it.
