Oh this was a bad thing to find tonight. But first ...
I made me a metal rod to prime the engine. Turned the crank 1/10th of a
turn, cranked my drill motor for 3 secs, turn crank, crank drill, etc.
Happy with it now.
I've been mostly ignoring the diff adjustment thread, since I had not
planned on taking mine apart. I purchased the 65 posi diff and 4 sp that
Gary Swiatowy posted last year time. But, I've run into a problem with it.
The diff itself seems okay, AFAIK, but one of the gears is gone in the 4sp.
No problem, I can use my existing 4sp. Cleaned them both, got a new gasket
bolted them together. But now, I realize there were were no hold downs for
the universal joint caps. No problem, I'll use my old one. Uh-oh - old
bolts are too big for the posi - WAAAAH !!!
Now, I think that says the posi is indeed a 65, with the smaller bolt holes.
I'm gonna be pretty hard on this thing, and I don't want to depend on any
1/4-20 bolts holding my axles together. Agreed?
I've never been into a diff, and I don't have the time to learn. How hard
would it be to change the yokes out, if possible? How long will it take?
Honestly, I'm intimidated by the backlash/preload conversation.
Or, do I just go with what I got, and try the posi install later?
Thanks,
Barry Ellison
