<VV> Sooty Carbs and Exhaust

Hey everybody:

My FC has been suffering from diminished performance lately.  I know I need 
to tune it up.

I had the air cleaners off today and I noticed that the carbs are black 
inside...like exhaust has blown through them.  The tailpipes are also sooty.

Does my van have a big problem or is this just a carb or ignition problem?
