I had this happen one time, cause was distibutor shaft had sheared thru the
cam-to-distributor drive gear pin hole. Engine still ran and friction at the
fracture surface in the gear provided enough drag that the oil pump still
pumped (weakly) preventing the complete loss of oil pressure and engine demise.
Easy to diagnose, if this is cause in your case. Just note distrbutor rotor
location (for reassembly) and remove distributor. If shaft has separated you
will be able to pull it into two pieces.
