My take (from experience) on why many replies to technical questions are 
private is that is is due to having several "sharp shooters" in our group who 
insist on zinging someone whose answer is not perfect from their perspective. 
While the zingers are sometimes clothed as a true concern for ensuring technical 
accuracy, their tone is often less than sensitive. Some folks probably feel 
like it isn't worth the risk. FWIW,

Where were all the suggestions "published";  private replies?  I only 
saw ONE "public" reply!  Jeez, this is so totally "on-topic" for this list I 
can't understand why the replies weren't on the list.
