Well, you DO get perspective from where the mirror is located on the car...
you ARE looking at it, right.
Also, if a vehicle is not visible in my rear view (inside) mirror and IS
visible in my side view mirror, I'm certainly not going to be attempting a
lane change at that time.
Towing was not considered in my prior, but you COULD make a slight lean
toward the side window to pick up the side of the trailer in the side view
mirror.
For years, I had mirrors adjusted so I could just see the tail of the car I
was driving. That damn near got me killed. I much prefer to see what is
coming out of the other lane (even two lanes over) than to be surprised by
the car that "came out of nowhere".
Give it a try. You'll be surprised at what you've been missing (not seeing)
your way.
