Thanks to a couple of notes on what to look for, and not... I decided the 
only solution was to strip off all the tape and insulation and trace the wires by 
hand. There was too much cross-over with the ohmeter due to what turned out 
to be some melted wires. Turns out that someone had spliced the wires to the 
coil in several places so that they just looked like the ones from the 
alternator. All is well, and no, there is no proper connection between the two parts 
:-).
