<snip>Craig, what are the jet sizes in your primary carbs and what is
altitude
where you live? Do you use the same same '67 carb/jet setup on the
street that won the fuel economy contest?<unsnip>
The primaries are 50s. I live at 2600 feet. Yes, I run exactly the same
carb and jetting as I used in the econorun (which was at more like 1500ft). Here
are some more pertinent details:
I run 24" OD tires and a 3.08 axle with an EM 4-speed (for its lower first
gear). The engine is a 140, so it has dual (low restriction) exhaust, larger
valves and exhaust manifolds: all of which contribute to reduced breathing
losses. The cam is a 95hp cam, retarded 4 degrees. This is the stock "high torque"
set-up for a PG140 engine. It has the standard 9:1 (or is it 9.25:1?)
compression. This unusual cam puts the peak engine efficiency down into the right
range for my 3.08 gears.
During the econorun, I ran 40-45 mph, shut-off on the hills, and ran 40psi in
the tires. The 100 mile run had no elevation change beginning to end and
mild rolling hills. The magic in the econorun was the 40-45 mph speed. The
magic in regular highway cruise is in the cam and gearing.
