should be damp proof, being fully " potted " in plastic and all .... I
would rather guess that wiping everything dry rearranged something or maybe
popped the capacitor lead .. although they usually run without the
capacitor.

But here is a classic and maybe only good use for WD 40; always have a
nearly full big can of this stuff in your engine compartment; after an
aggressive car wash, ( engine wash ) I just automatically flush out the
center coil wire, both on the coil and on the distributor. That usually
lets the engine start, occasonally I need to flush out the distributor end
of the plug lead wires.
I prefer to NOT take off the spark plug snappy ends, figuring they jump off
too easily anyway. So far, if the engine starts and runs sorta ok, the
moisture dries out from the hot engine in a few minutes anyway.
