If this is indeed the case, then there's more than something wrong with the
filter!

There's a pressure by-pass valve in the engine that's not functioning
properly, and that's a BIG potential problem! In the 'Vair, it's located in
the rear (front...depends on your perspective....it's the aluminum gizmo
that the oil filter base attaches to at the back of the car) extension
assembly, and is either jammed up with crud, or is otherwise jammed in the
"closed" or partially closed position. This little non-functioning, often
overlooked item can lead to just tons of nasty problems, from exploded
oil-filter cans to broken cam shafts/drive gears to spun main and rod
bearings! It's a potential "slate-wiper", one of those little dip-sh**
problems that's at the head-end of a LOT of disproportionately severe
"Unintended Consequences".

FWIW, in most engines, oil only passes through the filter at low RPM....at
higher RPM's, the filter is completely or at least significantly by-passed.
It's one of the reasons that your owners manual on a new car doesn't want
you to be running at sustained highway speeds for the first 2000
miles......the metal that gets worn out of the engine in that time needs to
get trapped in the filter, not circulated through the bearings! Racing
engines use very large and quite pricey "full-flow" filtration systems as a
result of this too.
