Dave,
       Try separating your brake light problem into parts.  Do this by 
unplugging the wire that goes OUT of the brake switch and back to the brake lights 
in the rear.  Now if the fuse still blows when stepping on the brake pedal you 
know the pedal switch is shorted to ground and should be replaced.  If the 
fuse does NOT blow, you know the pedal switch is OK and the problem lies in the 
wiring to the back OR in one of the brake light sockets.  If the fuse doesn't 
blow, you could try unplugging both sockets and again seeing if the fuse blows 
when stepping on the pedal.
       Separating sections of the wiring downstream of the fuse should enable 
you to locate the specific area causing the problem.
