<VV> LM Door Plastic Thingee

Borrowed our friends V8 Toronado powered 66 Corsa and on the way home that 
little 
platic jiggy in the door mechanism broke and the door would not open.   
Did the trick with a piece of wood and pushing from the inside and got it 
open.  Then like an idiot I closed it.  Got it open again with a 
considerably higher amount of force.  Got the mechanism out.  Now, where 
does that plastic piece come from, what does it do, and how do we replace 
it, or should I scrounge up a different mechanism?
